The topic in this issue is the role legal advisory plays at the crossroads of AI and geopolitics. The global landscape for data, cyber, and AI is shifting fast. Geopolitical concerns have been present in technology investments and become a central, often disruptive, force at the negotiation table. We have witnessed an increased interest in European technology solutions, and the key question today is not about whether the service or solution is technically reliable, but rather can the service provider be trusted with sensitive business information, or could trust be compromised due to geopolitical location or a political turn of events. As we enter 2026, we are shifting from efficiency and cost-savings into finding real business value from AI. This year is not just about improving what already exists, such as making same work tasks faster, but rethinking the entire process, business model, and offerings. Data, cybersecurity, and AI now raise legal questions across regulation, corporate governance, infrastructure, and dispute resolution — often simultaneously. Over the past year, we have supported clients at the forefront of these transformations. We advised Tesi, Finnish Industry Investment Ltd, in the investment in NestAI, an AI research and development lab. We advised Patria, a global defence and technology company, in a strategic data project, focusing on data and AI. We supported a Nordic retail chain with authority investigation relating to the use of AI in retail stores, advised on the use of AI at the workplace, and on AI-related copyright questions. Despite the EU’s current focus on the simplification of existing EU digital rules, the big picture is clear. The rules on data, cybersecurity, and AI are here to stay and businesses must navigate in this evolving regulatory landscape. Do not hesitate to reach out should you wish to discuss AI or any of the topics highlighted in this newsletter.
